Last week MP’s called on the government to accelerate the proposed takeover of Southern Train services, as Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) prepare to cancel 341 trains a day. Last year the government indicated that Southern Rail will be an expired franchise by 2021, with Transport for London (TfL) taking control of their services.

There have been issues in the last few months with trains being cancelled and delayed due to the shortage of train drivers. Issues began for GTR and Southern Rail in the beginning of this year when relations between GTR and the railways workers union broke down. As a result several strikes have occurred in the past few months. If you travel by train you will have noticed these annoyances, which have caused ongoing disruption to Southern Train services. So far the Department for Transport have ruled out moving against GTR, but a debate on the matter will be held in Westminster this week.

Don’t be disheartened, disruptions on your way home will be decreasing! GTR claims that cutting services will prevent disruption and will make services more reliable for commuters.  If the Department for Transport does decide to take control of Southern Rail services they aim to make rail services even more reliable, whilst keeping the same number of services available for commuters.  The changes proposed by GTR and potentially TfL will help make travelling by train even easier!

What do you think will happen if TfL does take over Southern Rail services? Will services become more reliable?
