Your local area

Most facilities in your area are located in the centre of East Wittering village, Cakeham Road. This includes a convenience store, a pharmacy, a medical centre, a post office as well as a range of pubs, cafés and restaurants.

The Witterings are also known for their beaches, which are beautiful at all times of year. East Wittering beach is the closest from your house, being around a 15-20 minute walk. Other beaches include Bracklesham Bay (20-25 minute walk) and West Wittering beach (45-50 minute walk or an 11 minute cycle). Most beaches in this area are sandy at low tide. Pedestrian routes

With plenty of local things to see and do, Wittering Place is great for pedestrians. There are many local public rights of way (PRoW) including footpaths and bridleways.

West Sussex County Council has an online interactive map that you can use. This shows you the variety of routes available. If you enjoy walking or would like to walk more often, why not join one of your local walking groups. This is a great way to find out about your local area and meet new people!

West Sussex County Council provides some easy walking trails. There are 14 easy countryside trails, summarised within a booklet which can be printed for particular routes of interest. Local cycle network

The immediate area around the Witterings and into Chichester is fairly flat, making it attractive for everyone to get out and about on their bikes, no matter your age or ability.

Your home is only around 40-45 minutes cycle to Chichester, and so why not cycle into the city? Park your bike up at Chichester station and get the train onwards? Or just have an explore of the different cycle routes nearby, whether that is the National Cycle Network (NCN) routes 2 or 288, or exploring the Saltern way, which is a leisure cycle and pedestrian route from West Wittering into Chichester alongside the very picturesque Chichester Harbour.

If you are new to cycling and want to join like-minded people, why not join a cycling group? CTC Bognor and Chichester Group is part of Cycling UK. Run by an experienced cyclist, taking relatively traffic free routes, with varied routes depending on your experience. Travel by bus

The nearest bus stops from your house are roughly a 7 minute walk away. The bus stops are called St Annes Court and are found on Stocks Lane. Here you can get the 52 or 53 into Chichester City centre. Cross the road (head to the westbound side) for service 52. Stay on the left-hand side (eastbound) of the road for service 53. These bus stops are marked on your local area map.

There are good bus links from Wittering Place to Chichester on routes 52 and 53. These services are operated by Stagecoach, providing a frequent link from your home into Chichester City Centre.

The Department for Transport’s £3 bus fare scheme runs until the end of 2025. There are also season tickets available which can help make things even more affordable. So why not take the bus for a cheap, sustainable and relaxing way to get around?

There is also a schooldays only bus (No. 614). This links your home with Selsey Academy, your nearest secondary school. You can catch this bus from Furzefield Bus Stop (north of your home on Piggery Hall Lane) at 07:38, which is around a 5 minute walk from your house. It also serves St Annes Court at 07:49. The return journey departs Selsey Academy at 15:10.

  • Season tickets offer unlimited travel on services and can prove cheaper than running a car

Travel by train

Chichester Railway Station (CCH) is located 10.2km away and is easily accessible via the 52/53 bus (27 minutes) or a 42 minute cycle.

There are a range of facilities at the station including a ticket office, step free access, toilets, refreshments, waiting room, car parking and spaces for 180 bicycles.

Why take the train?

  • Taking the train means you can work on the go or relax, without the stress of driving and parking.
  • It’s good for the planet; trainline will show you how much CO2 you saved based on your journeys!
  • It can be faster than travelling by road.

There are a range of railcards you can purchase by visiting www.railcard.co.uk/. The Network Railcard could give you up to 1/3 off rail fares across the South East (including London). There are also other Railcards available for young people, pensioners, veterans and families.

Cycle to the station!

Southern allows bicycles on trains throughout the day with the following exceptions:

  • On trains due to arrive in London, Brighton or Kensington Olympia between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Monday to Friday, except on public holidays.
  • On trains departing London, Brighton or Kensington Olympia between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, except on public holidays.

Car travel options

Car Sharing

Save money by sharing costs with other people – a commuter can typically save around £1,000 a year by car-sharing. Reduce stress and cut your carbon footprint at the same time. 

Liftshare is a free car share scheme with a database of over 700,000 people to share a car with. You can find both passengers and drivers to share with, or advertise a journey you are making. There is an app but also a website: http://www.liftshare.com/uk

Car club

Chichester has a car club called Co-Wheels. A a pay as you go car hire scheme, Co-Wheels is a great way to get around your local area for day trips or work events at a fraction of the price of owning your own vehicle. Efficient Driving Tips

Still need to drive your own car? There are many ways to help your fuel efficiency, which in turn saves you money on your fuel bill. Why not try some of the following techniques:

  • Remove unnecessary weight from your car such as roof racks or boxes
  • Avoid breaking and accelerating hard by driving smoothly
  • Limit the use of your air conditioning
  • Check your tyres are fully inflated
  • Stick to the speed limit – speeding often leads to higher fuel consumption

Home delivery

Rather than getting Amazon parcels delivered to your house, you could pick them up from a locker or counter nearby! Your nearest counter is at Co Op food Bracklesham, which is approximately a 24 minute walk or a 6 minute cycle from your home.
