Free Travel Incentives

As a first resident at York & Elder you can claim a range of free travel incentives*. These include:

  • Contribution towards either
    • A FREE Annual CITYSAVER bus pass worth £820; or
    • Reimbursement for rail travel (equivalent in value to the CITYSAVER bus pass ticket price)
  • £150 Cycle voucher (choose from two local stored to redeem your voucher);
  • One year Car Club membership with £50 driving credit with Enterprise Car Club;
  • 4 x 30 day* Free Beryl Bikeshare Usage (* up to 800 mins/30 days – months need not be taken consecutively, excludes £1 electric bike unlock fee) and
  • Free Bikeability/Adult Cycle training at any or all levels

Terms & Conditions

  • Full Terms and Conditions are available from the York & Elder team.
  • Each travel incentive offer is available once per first resident. This includes all members of the first household to occupy a dwelling, including children, where appropriate
  • To claim the voucher, you will need to speak with the York & Elder team. They will provide details of the T&C’s specific to the claimed voucher
  • The voucher’s expiry date is shown on the voucher. The voucher is valid up to and including the expiry date
  • Vouchers cannot be exchanged for cash, returned, deferred or refunded
  • The voucher(s) may be amended, changed or cancelled without notice.

Your Local Area

Your new home is located close to a number of facilities in Brighton, as highlighted in the table below. With London Road so close many of your local needs are catered for, but you’re also only a 14-minute walk from North Street and a 16-minute walk from the Lanes.

Local Walking and Cycling Maps

Brighton & Hove Council have both walking and cycling maps, along with other useful links to help plan your journey.

The walking maps are available for north, east and west Brighton, and can be printed out. The council website also includes additional useful links including details of the South Downs National Park. To find out more visit:

The cycle map includes information on cycle lanes and contraflows, along with information about cycle shops and parking locations.  You can even save your desired map and annotate it. To take a look at the map visit: www.brightonandhovecyclemap.co.uk/

York & Elder is well located in relation to both formal (dedicated cycle lanes) and informal cycle routes. The map below shows the National Cycle Network routes nearby.

Brighton & Hove Ramblers

One of the local walking clubs close to your home is the Brighton & Hove Ramblers. They are a friendly walking club that do regular group walks. Joining the Ramblers is a great way to make some new friends and get fit while doing it! Find out more at www.ramblers.org.uk/go-walking/ramblers-groups/brighton-hove-group.

Brighton Mitre Cycling Club

The Brighton Mitre Cycling Club was established in 1894. The club runs regular club rides on Saturday and Sunday mornings and Thursday evenings during the summer months.

A variety of pace and distance to suit all abilities with the addition of gravel rides every other Sunday.

Annual memberships cost £20 and you can go along twice for free to see if you like it!

Cycling Training Courses

Brighton & Hove City Council provide Bikeability  for children in school from years 5-10. Courses are provided in Hove Park and Preston park during school holidays. While adult cycling training is also provided for those 19 or over. These courses are free for first residents of York & Elder, ask the on site team for more details.

Bicycle User Group

For residents of York & Elder a Bicycle User Group has been established which will help with a number of sessions throughout the year. These sessions will include both repairs / maintenance and training elements.

Residents are welcome to attend ‘Bike Buddy’ sessions, ‘Dr Bike’ sessions and social rides. Information on what the ‘Bike Buddy’ and ‘Dr Bike’ sessions would entail can be found at www.bike-buddy.co.uk/ and www.bikeright.co.uk/courses/dr-bike/.

Our last Dr Bike session took place in April, and we’ve another coming to York & Elder in September. Keep your eye’s peeled for the date.

Beryl Bikes

The Beryl BTN bikeshare scheme has re-launched. The closest stands are currently at 50, London Road or Brighton Station North car park. For more information visit, www.beryl.cc/scheme/brighton-and-hove.

Bus Services

Why take the bus?

  • The walk to and from the bus stop is a great way to incorporate some physical activity into your daily routine.
  • It gives you time to relax and read a book or use the free wi-fi whilst you travel to your destination.
  • Season tickets offer unlimited travel on services and can prove cheaper than running a car.

Rail Services

The closest railway station is Brighton Station, located approximately 400m southwest of York & Elder (a 5 minute walk away) when using the Greenway. The station is operated by Southern Railway and benefits from Thameslink, Great Northern, Great Western Railway (GWR) and the Gatwick Express services.

Brighton station is equipped with 740 cycle storage spaces through the provision of 100% double stacked spaces, a station car park, manned ticket office, CCTV, a comprehensive range of facilities, and step free access.

From Brighton Railway Station, direct trains are available to a number of locations. A number of these journeys to a selection of destinations have been summarised below.

The quickest route to Brighton Railway Station on foot is either along the Brighton Green Way (dark blue) or the A270 and Fenchurch Walk (light blue).

Using rail services as your chosen mode of transport is a great way of reaching your end destination via a stress and traffic free journey. You would no longer need to worry about parking or paying for petrol. It also provides you with a number of money saving opportunities from the multiple travel cards available for you and your family.

Sustainable Driving

Still need to drive your own car? Fear not. You can still become more sustainable by following these sustainable driving techniques:

  1. Remove unnecessary weight from your car such as roof racks or boxes
  2. Avoid breaking and accelerating hard by diving smoothly
  3. Limit the use of your air conditioning
  4. Check your tyres are fully inflated
  5. Stick to the speed limit – Speeding often leads to higher fuel consumption

Car sharing is a simple way of cutting the cost of fuel and parking, reducing congestion and pollution and cutting the stress of driving. The closest car club vehicles can be found on Elder Place, immediately outside York & Elder, or on Boston Street One, Brighton, BN1 4GQ.
